Bringing Tokyo 2020 to Life on Discovery+.

The challenge

While going through a re-brand, Discovery+ was on the verge of becoming the home of the Tokyo 202 Olympics. Th design team were tasked with seamlessly integrating the Olympic experience into the existing Discovery+ experience. User should be able to easily navigate from lifestyle and entertainment content the Discovery+is known for, into the home of Tokyo 2020 from all platforms.

Incorporating a sports-centred experience into the existing experience would be a challenge. Since the Discovery+ offering is so varied, carrying content from reality, cooking, adventure, documentary and more, the Tokyo 2020 integration needed to be simplistic and carefully implemented to ensure users who weren’t keen on sports, weren’t alienated.

Constraints

Discovery was in the midst of a launch, converting from dplay UK to Discovery+ UK. This meant that users were still getting used to the new look and feel of the product. We had to make sure we brought Tokyo 2020 to life in an exciting yet considerate way. Being in the middle of a pandemic was also an adjustment for the team. We were tasked with a re-launch as well as hosting the biggest event of the year while being stuck in our home offices (or in my case, bedroom).

Evolving the product

I was tasked with evolving out existing EPG (Electronic programme guide or TV guide) to cater for the various new bits of data that come with viewing live olympic games.
